Fall’s forgotten most of its beauty already, with the golds, reds, and oranges of October mostly gone, but that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to the great outdoors – and you don’t need to go too far to get to it.
All around the Edmond and Oklahoma City area there a plenty of locations where nature meets metro. Most of the best urban hikes (and no, an urban hike isn’t just a stroll through the park between high-rises) in the state are right around the corner here in Edmond and OKC.
Check out Lake Hefner in northwest OKC. Here, it’s never too cold to fish thanks to their enclosed and heated fishing docks and a delicious restaurant. Make a day of hiking and fishing without leaving the city!
And for something less watery, check out the lovely, airy Mitch Park in Edmond. Through its 280 acres, you can stroll over 5 miles of paved, multi-use trails, pausing to play a round of Frisbee golf or grab lunch at one of the many pavilions or picnic tables.
If you want something you know is going to be good, take National Geographic’s advice and go to one of their “Ten Best Parks and Playgrounds,” Martin Park Nature Center. With 2.5 miles of easy hiking, their famous Pollinator’s Playground, and a fun nature education center, this is the best place for the whole family no matter the temperature.
The best urban hikes aren’t necessarily limited to the summertime; brave the cooling weather and get out one last time before winter hits!
