To check your oil level is not as hard as it may seem. Before anything, make sure you have a paper towel or washcloth. We will talk about that later. The first thing to do is to pop your hood. Look inside your car on the driver's side, you should see the lever that will allow you to open the hood. Once your hood is slightly popped, feel around for the lever that allows the hood to rise all the way up (hardest part) and lastly search for the oil gauge. The gauge will look like a long thermometer once you pull it out. There is a minimum, and a maximum oil level to monitor. To view this, wipe the oil off of the gauge with your cloth or paper towel. You can use your hand, but then you will realize that oil is slimy and nasty. To get rid of the sliminess, the first instinct is to wipe it on your pants. This is not what we recommend at Edmond Hyundai, don't ruin your pants or washer machine by wiping oil on them. This is a party foul. Save yourself the trouble and use your cloth or paper towel then stick the gauge back into to the oil compartment. Upon the second viewing, you will get a clear reading. Too low oil level will be below the minimum line, too much oil level will be over the maximum line. Low oil will lead to a decrease in car performance, burning oil smell, engine clunking and overheating. All of these can lead to further problems that might be beyond repair. Too much oil and the more the merrier does not apply here. Instead, think more oil more problems. Overflowing of oil can happen if there is too much in your car, burning oil smell is another side effect and smoke from the engine compartment. Only place rising smoke is accepted and cherished is on a grill or a smoker.  Never from your engine. What happens next? First, turn off your AC, you need your hottest setting, this will pacify the heat inside of your engine. Turn it all the way up, in full throttle. Let your engine rest and settle if possible; finally, check your coolant level. This is located under your hood; it will have a cap that you remove. If unsure, check your car guide or use Internet connection to find references before continuing. There is no need to injure yourself in this case. If the coolant level does appear low, with a high probability of it being so, add water or coolant, you should always keep an emergency supply of either in your car for safety. My dad has been a do-it-yourselfer ever since I can remember. When I got my first new car in high school, the minute it needed a new battery he took the chance to teach me how to do it myself. And frankly, with a dead battery it tends to be something you have to do yourself because if the battery dies it'll be pretty difficult to get it to a mechanic. So here is a basic step-by-step walk through on how to change your vehicles battery so that you're never stranded in busy Edmond without a plan. To start things off, make sure your car is turned OFF and you are wearing safety gloves. Pop your hood and locate your car's battery, it'll be a large rectangle. Loosen the negative (black) cable by loosening the nut and detaching the cable from it. Then do the same to detach the positive (red) cable. If there is a bracket holding the battery in place, you will want to use a pair of pliers to loosen and remove it. Car batteries are surprisingly heavy, so brace yourself to lift it and use the handle if your battery has one attached. When adding in the new battery, make sure you reattach the cables in their appropriate places; positive cable to positive nut, and negative cable to negative nut.  Retighten the bracket back over the battery and you should be all set. If while you're reattaching the battery you notice an corrosion on the cables or connections, use battery cleaning solution and a wire brush to clean off the corrosion and create a better connection. Car batteries cannot just be tossed out with your regular trash, so make sure you dispose of it properly.
